Fornearly
a decade, photographer Carlos Batts has honed and refined his artistic
sensibilities into a balanced mosaic of lowbrow and highbrow culture,
integrating the visceral, intense, and sometimes shocking content of his
editorial work and montages with the immediate vibrancy of his fashion
shoots.
The Baltimore
native has contributed for VIBE, Hustler, Skechers, NBC, Ballantine
Books, DCComics, AGFA Film, Sportswear International, FLEER trading
cards and While You Were Sleeping among an ever-expanding universe of
other forums. In addition, Batts has directed bizarre videos(music
and erotic), and created album art for an eclectic mix of musical acts
including DANZIG, Pig Destroyer, Ink and Dagger, Dwarves, Dog Fashion
Disco, and Mastodon.
Presently living
in Los Angeles, Batts' admixture of cubist geometry, 70's exploitation
themes, bizarre lighting techniques, a variety of textured backgrounds,
slice and dice editing, and a keen eye for beauty in its many forms has
contributed to the piquancy and relevance of his work.
